Featured Alliance Events

The Mayor's Alliance for NYC's Animals sponsors or co-sponsors several large adoption events each year, all with the common goal of finding homes for New York City's homeless cats, dogs, and rabbits. In addition to offering pet adoptions, some of these events also feature low-cost microchipping, dog licensing, and other services that promote responsible pet ownership. All of these events are family-friendly and fun!

Adoptapalooza

Several times each year since 2010, the Mayor's Alliance for NYC's Animals proudly presented Adoptapalooza — our signature pet adoption extravaganza — in Union Square Park and other locations in Manhattan, Brooklyn, and Queens. These public events featured wonderful cats, dogs, and rabbits for adoption from dozens of NYC-area animal shelters and rescue groups. Each Adoptapalooza also featured additional activities, including advice on pet care, training, and grooming; product giveaways; microchipping; dog licensing; pet photographers; dog performances; and other fun activities for the whole family — two- and four-legged alike.

After finding homes for more than 17,000 animals at Adoptapalooza events since 2010, in 2019 we passed the Adoptapalooza torch to Rock & Rawhide, an organization that we worked with over the years to build the event into the tremendously successful pet adoption venue it became. The Petco Foundation's generous sponsorship of the event was critical to its success over the years.

New York Pet Fashion Show

Each February, the New York Pet Fashion Show — the largest pet fashion and animal rescue benefit in the country — returns to the historic Hotel Pennsylvania in Midtown Manhattan, kicking off New York Fashion Week and the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show. This fun annual event, co-chaired by pet fashion designer Ada Nieves and publisher and public relations professional Gregg Oehler, features themed costume runway shows with attendees' dogs (and other pets) walking the catwalk along with rescue dogs looking for homes. A Best in Show award is given for the best costume. The evening also includes the presentation of Golden Paw Awards to honor those who make a difference helping animals. A portion of the event's proceeds are donated to the Mayor's Alliance for NYC's Animals.

Bark in the Park

It's not every day you can take your dog to a ball game. But each summer, the Brooklyn Cyclones invite fans to bring their dogs to the annual Bark in the Park baseball game at MCU Park in Coney Island. Cyclones fans and their canine friends have the opportunity for an exciting "dog's day" of fun as the Cyclones take on another area team. Bark in the Park features dog and cat adoptions from Alliance Participating Organizations, a dog parade, and other fun family activities.

The Algonquin Cat's Annual Celebration

The Algonquin Hotel in Midtown Manhattan has had a total of 11 cats residing within its legendary walls since the 1930s, including seven Hamlets and three Matildas. Each cat who has reigned at The Algonquin has been a rescue, with the current Matilda beginning her residence in December 2010. Very popular with hotel guests, she receives fan mail and gifts constantly, from all around the world. Each summer, Matilda and The Algonquin Hotel open their doors to celebrate her birthday with a party, cat fashion show, and adoption event benefitting the Mayor's Alliance for NYC's Animals and promoting cat and kitten adoption in New York City.

Whiskers in Wonderland

The Whiskers in Wonderland holiday pet adoption event, presented by the Mayor's Alliance for NYC's Animals, in partnership with the Petco Foundation, features lovable cats, kittens, and rabbits just waiting to be welcomed into new homes for the holidays. In return, these furry new friends will give the gift of unconditional love! Don't miss New York City's largest pet adoption opportunity of the holiday season!

Architects for Animals: Giving Shelter

Every year since 2010, some of New York's most respected architects and designers, through an inventive project called Architects for Animals, have been helping our city's feral and stray community kitties by creating imaginative winter shelters to provide them with a refuge from the cold. We are delighted to present these collections of unique, inspired winter shelters for public viewing at the Architects for Animals: Giving Shelter exhibit before they are placed in locations throughout the city to provide comfort for the cats. This annual exhibition benefits the New York City Feral Cat Initiative of the Mayor's Alliance for NYC's Animals.

Maddie's® Pet Adoption Days

In 2013 and 2014, the Mayor's Alliance for NYC's Animals hosted Maddie's® Pet Adoption Days in New York City. This national event, sponsored by Maddie's Fund and billed as the largest free pet adoption event in America, resulted in more than 8,500 adoptions by participating organizations in the NYC area. The Alliance and all the groups that participated in the events are grateful to Maddie's Fund for sharing Maddie's Pet Adoption Days with us and for helping to find new homes for so many Little New Yorkers.

Broadway Barks

Broadway Barks is a free, star-studded dog and cat adoption event, created in 1999 by Bernadette Peters and Mary Tyler Moore, benefiting New York City animal shelters and rescue groups. The annual event, produced by Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS, takes place in July in Shubert Alley, with festivities and celebrity presentations of wonderful pets for adoption. Up until 2016, when Broadway Barks became a 501(c)(3), the Mayor's Alliance for NYC's Animals served as fiscal agent for Broadway Barks.
