About Us

Our Mission

The Mayor's Alliance for NYC's Animals is committed to seeing the day when no New York City dog or cat of reasonable health and temperament is killed merely because he or she does not have a home.

Organizational Overview

The Mayor's Alliance for NYC's Animals is a 501(c)(3) non-profit charity founded in 2003 with the goal of transforming New York City into a community where no dogs or cats of reasonable health and temperament will be killed merely because they do not have homes. Before the Alliance's founding, the live release rate at NYC's municipal shelter system, Animal Care Centers of NYC (ACC), was under 25%.

Driven by our ten-year strategic plan that outlined the organization's core objectives and key initiatives, the Alliance created strategic programs and services aimed at delivering on our goal of creating a no-kill community in NYC. These programs and services, coupled with the work and dedication of the more than 150 Alliance Participating Organizations that collaborated in our mission, achieved our goal. In 2019, ACC's live release rate remained above 90% for the third consecutive year.

Having accomplished our mission to make New York City a no-kill city, the Alliance reevaluated our programming to adapt to the evolving landscape of animal welfare in NYC. In 2019, we thoughtfully and carefully transitioned our key programmingWheels of Hope, Adoptapalooza, and the New York City Feral Cat Initiative — to other nonprofit Alliance partners.

Today, the Alliance serves as a resource for pet owners seeking services and resources to care for their pets, and for anyone looking to help improve the lives of NYC's animals. Our website, especially the Need Help? and Want to Help? sections, provides information and links to help people gain easy access to services, resources, and guidance related to pet care and other pet-related topics. Our goal is to help New Yorkers find the information they need to give their animal companions and all NYC animals their best lives possible!

"The main thing about the Mayor's Alliance was we tried to meet people where they were. We tried to figure out what they needed to make them better at what they were trying to do. We tried to bring services and resources, to be there for all the groups and all the shelters, and to bring them together in a collaboration. That's what you need to do. No single organization can do this alone. You have to work together. Whether you like the other person or you don't, you're all striving to do the same thing — and that's save animals — and to do that, you need to build a collaboration that works. And you can do it! It's possible! If we could do it in New York City, you can do it in your community."
