Fundraising Efforts Boost Mayor's Alliance Programs
ASPCA Challenge Yields Tremendous Public Response
When am New York hit the streets with its cover story in July about how increased gas prices are threatening the Mayor's Alliance Transport Van Program, the ASPCA immediately sprung into action and donated $10,000 to this lifesaving program — a program that each day moves animals out of the city's filled-to-capacity Animal Care & Control Shelters and into the care of other animal shelters and rescue groups that will find them permanent new homes.
The ASPCA's generous donation came with a challenge to New Yorkers to match its donation — a challenge that grabbed am New York's cover the following day and brought a tremendous response from the public. Within days, donations for the program passed $35,000!
Meanwhile, as donations continued to pour in, Trixie + Peanut — a high-end pet emporium for designer pet wear and accessories — partnered with the Mayor's Alliance to launch the "Wheels of Hope" campaign to raise funds for the transport van program. Following a kick-off event on August 10 at the store's East 20th Street location, "Wheels of Hope" donation boxes were dispersed to businesses around the city, where New Yorkers can continue to make donations. Pet Fashion Week
In August, Pet Fashion Week — a progressive tradeshow for the pet apparel industry timed for the holiday buying season in New York — extended its scope to raise money for several animal organizations. The Picasso Veterinary Fund of the Mayor's Alliance, along with the ASPCA, Animal Haven, Bide-a-Wee, the The Humane Society of New York, and North Shore Animal League, shared the proceeds from the week's end black tie fundraiser, silent auction, and raffle.
Tennis Pros Take the Courts for NYC's Animals
Despite being rained out twice, the Gisele & Bianca Bloom Tennis Event to benefit the Mayor's Alliance for NYC's Animals took place on Labor Day, September 4, 2006, at the Riverside Park Clay Tennis Courts in Manhattan. The event and its companion auction of tennis and non-tennis items on eBay raised money for Mayor's Alliance programs, including the Picasso Veterinary Fund. Among the players who turned out for exhibition matches were Gilad Bloom, Martin Blackman, and Tom Gullikson. A few T-shirts from the event are still available for $15 each; if you'd like to order, please e-mail us at info@AnimalAllianceNYC.org.
