Tough Economic Times, Holiday Adoptions Gain Media Attention

Not surprisingly, media coverage of homeless animal issues over the past several months has focused heavily on the effects of the economic downturn on pet owner/guardians and their pets, and the shelters and rescue groups that are responding to the increasing number of animals entering the shelter system. As more and more people find it necessary to surrender their companion animals to shelters because of job loss, foreclosures, and other economic stresses, more animals are at risk of becoming fatalities of these difficult times.

The message from the Mayor's Alliance has been clear: during stressful times, people more than ever need the comfort of their beloved companions. We encourage people to explore all options before giving up their pets to a shelter, including asking family or friends to care for their animals until their circumstances change. And for those people who are in a position to adopt, do it now, while adoptions are needed more than ever to save lives!

On the brighter side, the media is covering the need for more people to adopt now. Holiday pet adoptions is a hot topic, having gained important media coverage, including TV coverage of the Mayor's Alliance's holiday media event on December 9: Santa and Maddie, the Maddie's Fund mascot, and Animal Care & Control dogs on Fifth Avenue. Holiday adoption events and adoption van appearances featuring Alliance Participating Organizations also are receiving strong promotion in newspaper and online event listings.
