A Lineup of Special Animal Adoption Events Kicks Off This Memorial Day Weekend

NEW YORK, NY – Monday, May 18, 2009 – The Mayor's Alliance for NYC's Animals kicks off its calendar of summer events this Memorial Day weekend with a selection of pet adoption events in and around New York City.

These events provide New Yorkers interested in adopting a pet with excellent opportunities to meet dogs and cats (and sometimes other animals) available for adoption without visiting a shelter. Of course, New York City shelters (www.nycacc.org) also offer many wonderful animals for adoption, and they're open to the public seven days a week.

Adopting a companion animal instead of purchasing one from a pet store is becoming more and more popular among New Yorkers. In the last five years, adoptions from Maddie's Pet Partners — those shelters and rescue groups that participate in the Maddie's Rescue Project in NYC, administered by the Mayor's Alliance — have more than doubled, from 12,819 in 2003 to 26,219 in 2008.

The Mayor's Alliance for NYC's Animals is a coalition of approximately 160 animal shelters and rescue groups working with the City of New York to find homes for every cat and dog in the city who needs one. Its goal is to reduce and eventually eliminate the killing of healthy and treatable dogs and cats at NYC shelters simply because they do not have homes. The project is funded by Maddie's Fund® The Pet Rescue Foundation and the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) — one of the founding members of the Mayor's Alliance. Adoption events such as those listed here are helping the Mayor's Alliance to reach that goal.

Following is a list of adoption events taking place Memorial Day weekend. One of the events features a low-cost ($25) microchipping clinic for dogs and cats — providing an inexpensive way to ensure that a pet can be returned to the owner is the pet is lost or stolen. Microchipping is particularly valuable here at the beginning of the summer travel season.
