Mayor's Alliance for NYC's Animals to Host First Annual "New York Week for the Animals" This October

Week-long celebration features adoption events, educational programs and more, for NYC animal lovers

NEW YORK, NY – Wednesday, April 1, 2009 – The Mayor's Alliance for New York City's Animals and Animal World USA Weeks for the Animals announce the first ever annual New York Week for the Animals, from October 10–18, 2009. This state-wide celebration is designed to commemorate and build awareness of the importance of animals in our lives, as well as recognize the organizations and dedicated citizens who do incredible work each day to support our furry friends. Many events will be held throughout the week in NYC.

Joining forces with the Mayor's Alliance for NYC's Animals (a coalition of over 140 animal shelters and rescue groups working with the City of New York to find homes for every cat and dog in the city who needs one), New York Week for the Animals will feature adoption and low-cost spay/neuter events, educational programs, community events, and fundraisers aimed to promote the important roles that animals play in our everyday lives and how they help bring the Big Apple community together.

"We are excited about this week-long series of events for the New York City community and anticipate that this will help raise the public's awareness of our goal for a no-kill NYC by 2015," said Jane Hoffman, President of the Mayor's Alliance for NYC's Animals.

To ensure a successful New York Week of the Animals, the Mayor's Alliance and its participating organizations (APOs), as well as rescue and organizations throughout the state will develop a calendar of events for the week that will include activities such as pet adoption events, low-cost spay/neuter events, pet therapy in hospitals and nursing homes, a salute to animals in law enforcement and the military, school and art displays and activities, R.E.A.D. dogs in libraries, blessings of the animals, law seminar events, festivals, farm animal events, wine tastings, golf outings, art exhibits, film documentaries, walks for animals, and much more! Event organizers expect New York to break records in the number of events scheduled for one single state in the Animal World USA Weeks for the Animals campaign.

Other 2009 Weeks for the Animals are taking place in Delaware, Florida, Hawaii, Kentucky, Mississippi, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Washington, D.C., and Wisconsin.
