2017 Holiday Reading List: Curl Up With a Good Book About Cats

The end of the year is a time for gift-giving and curling up with a good book. Here are our picks of the season — cat books that will warm the heart of any kitty lover.

Nine Lives on the Street, “as told to” Jon Saunders, gives a cat’s eye view of life on the mean streets of New York City. Boo, a former Park Avenue pet, tells of his fantastic yet pretty believable adventures as a community cat, escaping numerous threats and finding friends in unexpected places. It’s a real page-turner that plays out across two boroughs of NYC. Along the way it gives readers some chuckles as well as insights into cat behavior and the lives of urban community cats. BUY NOW…

Strays by Britt Collins tells the incredible true story of a lost cat. It takes the reader on a bittersweet journey across the western U.S.A and into the hearts of the cat’s grieving owner and the troubled man who rescued her. Collins tells the story with compassion and a great flair for describing the delightful behaviors that endear cats to us. She also works a plug for Trap-Neuter Return (TNR) into the story — always a good thing. BUY NOW…

Bela by Michelle Ascher Dunn is told in the voice of an NYC feral kitten who grows up in the author’s back yard and gradually lets herself be coaxed into becoming a pet. It’s lovely story and a good depiction of how a feral cat can be socialized. Simple yet evocative illustrations by Abby Sanders help to bring the story to life. Proceeds benefit Anjellicle Cats Rescue, Animal Rescue Fund of the Hamptons, the ASPCA, and the NYC Feral Cat Initiative. BUY NOW…

Poetry from Scratch: A Kitten’s Book of Verse by Jennifer McCartney is a witty collection of poems written by cats who obviously hold master’s degrees in English Literature. The collection runs the gamut of poetic styles, from the classics (“The Rodent Not Taken”) to Beat poetry, odes, haikus, and limericks. Each poem is illustrated with an appropriate and funny cat photo. BUY NOW…
