If You've Lost a Pet…

If you've lost a dog, cat, or other pet in New York City, there are two things you need to do:

1)

File a lost pet report with Animal Care & Control. The best method for filing a report and submitting a photo of your animal is through the AC&C website.

You may also file a lost pet report by phone. Call the AC&C Call Center at (212) 788-4000 during their business hours, Monday–Friday, 8:00 a.m.–8:00 p.m., or Saturday & Sunday, 10:00 a.m.–6:00 p.m. At all other times, contact the AC&C shelters directly (see list below).

2)

Go to the Animal Care & Control shelters and look for him or her. When you visit the shelter to look for your pet, it's a good idea to take a photo with you to help the shelter staff locate your pet, and also proof of ownership, such as medical records for your pet. Shelter staff can scan your photo into the computer system and return it to you.

If You've Found a Pet…

If you've found a dog, cat, or other pet in New York City, you should file a found pet report. The best method for filing a report and submitting a photo of your animal is through the AC&C website.

You may also call the AC&C Call Center at (212) 788-4000 between 8:00 a.m. and 8:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. At all other times, contact the AC&C shelters directly (see list below).

If you cannot care for the animal until you can locate his or her owner, please bring the animal to the nearest Animal Care & Control shelter.

More AC&C Lost and Found Tips

More tips for reporting a lost/found pet can be found on the Lost and Found Reports factsheet.

Animal Care & Control Shelters

New York City has three Animal Care & Control shelters that service all five boroughs.

The Manhattan Animal Care Center, serving Manhattan and the Bronx, is located at 326 East 110th Street. Call (212) 722-4939.

The Brooklyn Animal Care Center, serving Brooklyn and Queens, is located at 2336 Linden Boulevard. Call (718) 272-7201.

The Staten Island Animal Care Center is located at 3139 Veterans Road West. Call (718) 984-5935.

If your pet is lost, in addition to filing a lost animal report with Animal Care & Control, we suggest you also contact vet offices and other pet-related businesses in your area to see if anyone has reported finding an animal matching the description of yours. You also can post "lost pet" flyers featuring a photo of your pet throughout your neighborhood, at vet offices, pet supply stores, and other businesses, but be sure not to post them on light posts, mailboxes, and other government-owned property or you might receive a fine.

Prevention

Microchip Your Pet

Having your pets microchipped is one of the best ways to increase the chance that, if your pet becomes lost or stolen and winds up at an animal shelter or veterinary office, he or she can be returned to you. Unlike dog tags and collars, which can fall off or be removed, microchipping is a more permanent form of identifying your dog or cat.

License Your Dog

New York State law requires that all owned dogs be licensed and the New York City Health Code requires every dog owner to have a dog license tag attached to their dog's collar while in public. Licensing helps reunite lost dogs with their owners!
