Pet-shelter
shakeup

The city's animal shelters have a new interim director
as a nationwide search begins for a permanent boss.
Mary Martin, who served as medical director at Animal
Care & Control until earlier this year, has signed on to run
the system for at least the next few months.
Meanwhile, former Director Ed Boks has accepted
a job to run the Los Angeles Animal Services Department.
Earlier this month, Boks and the AC&C Board
— which is headed by Health Commissioner Tom Frieden —
announced that his contract would not be renewed. Both parties said
it was a mutual decision.
"I am pleased the commissioner followed my
recommendation to appoint Mary Martin as interim director,"
Boks said. "This decision further demonstrates his newfound
commitment to making New York City a no-kill city."
AC&C, which operates under Health Department
contract, is required to take in all unwanted, homeless pets. The
no-kill goal means healthy, adoptable animals would no longer be
euthanized when there is no more space in city shelters.
"We're optimistic," said Jane Hoffman,
who heads the Mayor's Alliance of NYC Animals, a coalition of animal
rescue groups. "We look forward to working with Mary Martin,
who I understand is committed to working collaboratively."
