Dog that had ruff life now needs a home

When animal control workers first saw Janie, the pooch was a sorry sight.

The little Shiba Inu had been locked in a crate behind a home in Queens without food or water.

But being skinny was the least of her problems: Her jaw was broken and she had a nasty injury to one of her eyes.

But through a program that links badly hurt shelter dogs with medical help, Janie got the care she needed and is now looking for a new owner.

"She is a sweetheart," said Liz Keller of Glen Wild Animal Rescue in Sullivan County.

Meanwhile, the ASPCA is trying to figure out who left the dog behind the house at 114-41 196th St. in Queens late last month.

Animal Care & Control, which handles all homeless and unwanted animals in the five boroughs on a limited budget, didn't have the funds to pay for Janie's medical care.

Shelter workers called the Mayor's Alliance for NYC's Animals, which took the pooch to the Fifth Avenue Veterinary Specialists.

Keller, who used to manage Animal Care and Control's Manhattan shelter, will foster Janie through her animal rescue group.

Even though the playful pooch still needs medical treatment, she is healing well.

Keller said she's a "people dog."

"She wants to be with somebody all the time," Keller said. "I don't think she likes other cats and dogs, but she's good with people."

Her jaw is fixed, but the pup does make a "snorkling" sound, Keller said.

"It sounds like she is constantly snoring," she said with a laugh.

ASPCA Special Agent Joseph Pentangelo said a cruelty investigation is continuing.
