Get in Training: Central Park Event

It all adds up to millions of pets ending up at
animal shelters across the country. In New York City alone, an estimated
45,000 animals are euthanized at the city shelter every year.
Anyone can lend the city a hand in its fight against
animal overpopulation. Today, from noon to 4 p.m., gaggles of lovable
cats and dogs from scores of city groups will be up for adoption
at the Cat and Dog Adoption Event and Pet Care Festival in the Central
Park Bandshell (at 72nd St.).
The event, sponsored by the Mayor's Alliance, a
coalition of 40 adoption groups in collaboration with the city,
will also feature a low-cost microchipping clinic, coupons for discount
pet services, and a raffle for a chance to win a customized pet
video of your companion of choice.
Along with a Dixieland band, vets, groomers and
animal behaviorists will be on hand to answer questions on proper
pet care.
"It's important for people to know how to take
care of their pets after adopting, to ensure the animals don't end
up back in the shelter," said alliance President Jane Hoffman.
