Coalition to Boost City Animal Shelters

The city's overburdened animal shelter system is
set to get a much-needed boost from local humane organizations under
a newly forged public-private partnership.
The Center for Animal Care and Control, which handles
strays in all five boroughs, has seen its budget slashed and operating
hours reduced because of the budget crisis. Last year, a city controller's
audit said the center was mismanaged and focused on euthanizing
homeless pooches instead of finding them adoptive homes. Shelter
officials said they have limited resources and space to deal with
the city's unwanted animal population. Under an agreement released
yesterday, the Mayor's Alliance for New York City's Animals, a coalition
of rescue groups, will help the center in a more aggressive adoption
effort.
Mayor Bloomberg created the alliance as an appeal
to animal rights activists enraged by his budget cuts.
