ASPCA News Briefs: Pet-Ark Kiosk
ASPCA Animal Watch, Spring 2004
November 11 marked the debut of a new fixture of
the ASPCA's 92nd Street lobby: the Pet-Ark Kiosk. Now in use throughout
the city, the Mayor's Alliance-introduced kiosks are touch-screen,
ATM-style tools that allow visitors to search the New York Regional
Adoption web site (www.BigApplePets.com)
for pets that fit the criteria they're looking for, and take home
a printout of the results. Jane Hoffman explains, "After meeting
Dave Loftus, cofounder of Pet-Ark, we realized that this was a perfect
marketing and distribution tool for New York City. The Alliance
received seed money from celebrity Mary Tyler Moore and her husband,
Dr. Robert Levine; then, we met with participating Alliance
organizations to train and provide them with the resources needed
to include their available animals on the site."
She continues, "Today, nine kiosks are located
in New York's five animal control shelters/receiving centers, and
the shelters of each of our founding members: the ASPCA, the Humane
Society of New York in Manhattan, the Brooklyn Animal Rescue Center
(BARC) and Animal Haven, located in Queens." Now, if a shelter
does not house the type of pet a potential adopter is looking for,
the Pet-Ark Kiosk will point them in the direction of the facility
that does. Convenient for New Yorkers — and a lifesaver for
our shelter pets.
