Recovered and Ready for New Homes
from Out of the Cage! (Spring
2008)
Sam arrived at the Manhattan Animal Care & Control
(AC&C) shelter in February with a tibular fracture, the result
of a run-in with a car in the Bronx. The Mayor's Alliance took the
two-year-old Collie/Spaniel mix into its Picasso
Veterinary Fund program and agreed to have the fund pay for
Sam's emergency medical care. Following surgery at Fifth
Avenue Veterinary Specialists to repair the fractured leg, Sam
was transferred to Hope
Veterinary Clinic in Brooklyn, where he has undergone extensive
rehabilitative therapy, including hydrotherapy and acupuncture.
Now Sam is ready for a new
home, and he promises to bring his blue ball — which he
loves! — with him.
Three-month-old Gabriel, an adorable Pit Bull puppy,
came into the Manhattan AC&C shelter with a broken leg and chemical
burns on his back. Doctors at NYC
Veterinary Specialists successfully repaired the leg and treated
Gabriel's burns. The recovering pup was transferred to Murray
Hill Pet Hospital for follow-up care and recuperation. Today
Gabriel is ready and waiting for someone to adopt
him and help him forget his miserable first three months of life.

A good samaritan found Suki on the street in Astoria.
The sweet year-old tortie was pregnant and without a home. Suki
was brought into Murray Hill Pet Hospital, where she immediately
gave birth to three kittens. One kitten died, but Suki and her caretakers
at Murray Hill Pet Hospital pulled through her remaining kittens
— one of whom was born without eyes or a tail. Suki and her
6-week-old kittens are growing stronger every day, and are patiently
awaiting
adoption.
Sam, Gabriel, Suki and her kittens are just some
of the dogs and cats who are awaiting new homes today instead of
becoming a statistic. In the past, each one of these wonderful animals
likely would have been euthanized because funds to pay for their
necessary medical treatment were not available. But thanks to the
Picasso Veterinary Fund, and the generosity of all those caring
people who support it through their donations, more lives are being
saved, and more animals are getting a second chance for a good life.

Animals like Kira, the two-year-old Patterdale Terrier/Pug
mix who arrived at the Brooklyn AC&C shelter with a broken pelvis.
And Roo,
the year-old American Staffordshire Terrier who came into the Brooklyn
shelter with two broken elbows and a damaged heart valve. Both of
these wonderful dogs were treated at Fifth Avenue Veterinary Specialists
and later transferred to Murray Hill Pet Hospital for recovery before
being adopted.
