Thanks to a little help from the Picasso Veterinary Fund, pretty Ruby is now feeling great and looking for a new home.
Ruby is Out of Shock and Ready to Come Into Your Life!
Picasso Veterinary Fund in Action! (January 2010)
Two weeks ago, a frantic call came in to the Mayor's Alliance from a Bushwick resident. She explained that the previous day she had discovered a black-and-white domestic short-hair cat in a carrier that had been left on her doorstep. Although she wanted to take the cat into her home, her son is highly allergic to cats. Seeing no other options, she took her to the Animal Care & Control (AC&C) Care Center on Linden Boulevard.
The following morning, the woman heard a knock on her door. It was the sister of the woman who had left the cat the previous morning. She explained that her sister could no longer care for five-year-old Ruby, who is diabetic and requires daily insulin shots.
After she explained the situation, the Mayor's Alliance immediately contacted AC&C, and, sure enough, Ruby was in insulin shock. The Mayor's Alliance arranged for Ruby to be transported immediately to Murray
Hill Pet Hospital, one of our Picasso Veterinary Fund veterinary partners in Manhattan, where she was given emergency intravenous (IV) medications and insulin. Thankfully, Ruby stabilized fairly quickly, and the crisis is behind her. She's receiving her daily insulin injection and plenty of TLC at the hospital, and is patiently awaiting a loving adopter.
Ruby is very affectionate and mellow, and she accepts her daily shot like a champ. She appears to be equally happy on her own or with other cats.
If you'd like to make sweet Ruby a part of your family, all she asks is that that you're comfortable giving her the daily shot. It's not difficult to do, and Ruby will be patient with you. (If you've never administered an injection, the helpful staff at Murray Hill Pet Hospital can show you how it's done.)
Please contact us at picasso@AnimalAllianceNYC.org if you'd like to adopt Ruby. And if you'd like to help us continue to give second chances to homeless animals like Ruby, you can donate $5, $10, $100 — whatever you'd like — to the Picasso Veterinary Fund of the Mayor's Alliance. You can rest assured that your donation will go directly to help an animal in need.
We appreciate your support. And Ruby is waiting to hear from you!
