Roo Survives Abuse, Will Walk Away Triumphantly

Picasso Veterinary Fund in Action! (April 2008)

Roo walks like a crab and sits like a kangaroo. But she's all American Staffordshire Terrier, and her life is getting better every day.

The sweet one-year-old Terrier arrived at the Brooklyn Animal Care & Control (AC&C) shelter with two broken elbows, most likely the result of abuse. The Mayor's Alliance accepted Roo into its Picasso Veterinary Fund program and made arrangements for her to have surgery at Fifth Avenue Veterinary Specialists in Manhattan. Following the successful operation that involved inserting pins into her elbows, Roo was moved to Murray Hill Pet Hospital, where she is recuperating. Soon she will begin receiving hydrotherapy and acupuncture treatments at Hope Veterinary Clinic in Brooklyn, to facilitate the fullest possibly recovery for her legs. When her legs are strong enough, she will move home with her new foster parent who, in all likelihood, will adopt her permanently.

Eventually Roo will need another operation — "balloon" surgery to repair a damaged valve in her heart. But for now all her energies are going toward gaining strength in her legs. Her unusual gait, which carries her sideways in a crab-like manner, will probably revert to a normal gait over time. But it's likely that Roo will always sit like a kangaroo, as that cute characteristic appears to be just naturally her own.

As Roo settles into her new home, she will continue to receive therapeutic treatment to help her heal.

Roo is one of the lucky animals whose life-saving medical treatment is being paid for by the Picasso Veterinary Fund of the Mayor's Alliance. The fund is saving lives in New York City by paying for extraordinary treatment of illness or injuries for animals that wind up at AC&C shelters and, following treatment, can be placed into adoptive homes.
