Ginger Survives Critical Surgery…Now She Seriously Wants a New Home

Picasso Veterinary Fund in Action! (May 2011)

I was just hanging out in a Brooklyn apartment building lobby when NYPD officers picked me up and took me to the Animal Care & Control of NYC (AC&C) shelter on Linden Boulevard. They called me "stray" — can you imagine? — because apparently my former owner just left me and walked away.

AC&C staff named me Ginger, and took me in to get me ready to meet new adopters. But as luck would have it, my adoption debut had to be postponed when a vet at AC&C discovered I was bleeding internally. Not fun!

So AC&C staff asked the Mayor's Alliance for NYC's Animals if they would take me into their Picasso Veterinary Fund program. It's a wonderful program that helps pay for medical care for cats and dogs (such as moi) from AC&C who require medical treatment for an illness or injury.

The Alliance transported me on their Wheels of Hope for NYC's Homeless Pets van to to Fifth Avenue Veterinary Specialists in Manhattan, one of their Picasso Veterinary Partners, for emergency surgery that saved my life!. Afterwards, I was transferred to One Love Animal Hospital in Brooklyn, another veterinary partner, where I spent 12 days recovering from my surgery, and also being treated for a nasty case of pneumonia that I picked up along the way. What an ordeal! But I can tell you now that I've fully recovered, and I'm ready for a new family to foster or adopt me.

My best assets? Well, I'm absolutely great during off-leash hours in the park, and at the dog run. I get along splendidly with other dogs, and cats, too! I'm also great at walking on an easy-walk harness. I'm already housebroken, so no worries in that department. And I've already been spayed, vaccinated, and microchipped, too.

I'm one year old, and a mix of Lab and Pit — Lab's hair and temperament, and a gorgeous Pit face and body. Quite a catch, wouldn't you say?

I've also been told I'm very sweet. Do you want to find out? Just check out my Petfinder profile and contact pvfadoptions@AnimalAllianceNYC.org.
