Becca's Out of the Box and Ready for a New Home

Picasso Veterinary Fund in Action! (March 2008)

Becca's backstory illustrates how NOT to treat a lady.

She was discovered in late February tucked inside a cardboard box in an alleyway in the Bronx. The severely fractured back left leg must have been excruciating for the five-month-old kitten held hostage to the cold, not to mention an old fracture in her right leg that had healed on its own.

When the Animal Care & Control (AC&C) driver arrived to take Becca to the safety of the Manhattan Animal Care Center, she must have felt a huge sense of relief. Upon her arrival at the Care Center, an AC&C veterinarian examined the beautiful black Bombay and recognized right away that the kitten needed immediate medical attention to repair the recent fracture. The Mayor's Alliance agreed to take Becca into its Picasso Veterinary Fund program and get her the medical care she desperately needed.

The Animal Medical Center on East 62nd Street — one of New York City's finest veterinary hospitals and the Mayor's Alliance's newest veterinary partner in treating Picasso animals — took excellent care of Becca. They x-rayed her legs, repaired the fracture, and equipped the kitten with a metal brace called an external fixiture to keep her leg immobile so that it would heal properly. Then Becca was transferred to West Chelsea Veterinary on West 26th Street, where she is recuperating and growing stronger every day. Despite her obvious delight at being carried around like a princess, Becca already can get around somewhat on her own, and within a couple of weeks she'll be ready to begin physical therapy to regain full use of the leg. And then…on to a new adoptive home.

Without help from the Picasso Veterinary Fund, Becca's story might have taken a different turn. With so many animals being cared for at AC&C, severely injured animals like Becca haven't always been so fortunate as to get a second chance. But thanks to the Picasso Veterinary Fund, Becca and hundreds of other cats and dogs with unlucky pasts are getting bright futures.

But the Picasso Veterinary Fund can save only as many animals as made possible by those individuals who support the fund through their generous donations. Do you want to be a part of our Picasso success, and help save a life today? It's easy, and it can make a tremendous difference in the lives of so many animals like Becca who need a little help to get back on track.

You can make your tax-deductible donation to the Picasso Veterinary Fund conveniently online. Or mail a check or money order, payable to "Mayor's Alliance for NYC's Animals" with "Picasso Veterinary Fund" in the memo, to Mayor's Alliance for NYC's Animals, Attn: Picasso Veterinary Fund, 244 Fifth Avenue, Suite R290, New York, NY 10001. Please include your e-mail address with your check.

And by the way…have you been thinking about bringing a sweet and loving kitten into your family? Well, Becca is available for adoption, and we bet she would love to come live with you! If you or someone you know is interested in giving this precious kitten a future that will help her forget her past, please e-mail us at picasso@AnimalAllianceNYC.org.
