Even an Angel Sometimes Needs a Little Help

Picasso Veterinary Fund in Action! (September 2009)

It was about a week ago that Angel was abandoned at a midtown Manhattan theatre. A Good Samaritan noticed her in a small pink carrier with a note tucked inside that read, "My name is Angel. Please help me."

And so she did. The caring New Yorker took Angel to NYC Veterinary Specialists, a Mayor's Alliance Picasso Veterinary Fund partner hospital. Hospital staff took in the small, seven-year-old Himalayan cat and called the Mayor's Alliance for permission to treat Angel, with expenses paid by the Picasso Veterinary Fund.

Someone had left Angel in a carrier with a note asking for help. A caring stranger, NYC Veterinary Specialists, the Picasso Veterinary Fund, and a foster family stepped in to provide that help.

Upon her arrival at the hospital, Angel was very weak and hungry. She had a peculiar limp and the vet was concerned that possibly an internal injury was creating her unusual gait. Hospital staff conducted several tests to determine the problem. Surprisingly, her blood work came back normal and other tests showed no fractures. They concluded that Angel's condition was the result of years of malnourishment and poor care — perhaps living most of her life in a small cage.

Now Angel is recovering quickly, and already has a foster family that is likely to adopt her permanently. Angel is fortunate that there were so many willing to heed her plea: "Please help me." Thanks to the Good Samaritan who found her, the compassionate caregivers at NYC Veterinary Specialists, the Picasso Veterinary Fund of the Mayor's Alliance, and her new foster family, Angel is now in a loving home.

Perhaps you're interested in adopting or fostering one of our Picasso Veterinary Fund animals. You can meet them on our Petfinder page. Or you can help us to help more abandoned cats and dogs in need of medical care like Angel by donating to the Picasso Veterinary Fund. Your generous support will help us to provide necessary medical care for some very special Little New Yorkers who only need a little assistance to get on with their lives and into permanent homes.
