NYC Eartips: Summer 2010 The E-Newsletter of the New York City Feral Cat Initiative Welcome to our Summer 2010 issue of NYC Eartips, the e-newsletter of the New York City Feral Cat Initiative (NYCFCI). In this issue you'll read about the activities of the dedicated volunteers in New York City who are positively affecting community cats throughout the city, especially now during "kitten season," the months when intact cats breed the most. You'll also read about our Kitten Palooza! workshops in New York and New Jersey, and new resources available to aid you in helping NYC felines, including how you can acquire free straw with the purchase of a new cat shelter. Following are some highlights of particular interest: A new trap bank has been opened in Forest Hills, Queens, and the ASPCA's trap bank has moved from Manhattan to Brooklyn. Be sure you have the latest news and procedures for borrowing equipment by reading "New NYC Trap Banks & Procedures." Do you need to convince a city or town official that TNR is cost-effective? Learn about a new tool and research study that can help you make your case in "Feral Fiscal Impact Calculator Debuts Along with TNR Cost Research Study" by Best Friends Animal Society. We congratulate Urban Cat League's Mike Phillips, LVT, the first-ever recipient of the Humane Society Veterinary Medical Association's (HSVMA) "HSVMA Best Friend to Feral Cats" award. Watch for an interview with Mike in our next issue of NYC Eartips. The NYC Feral Cat Initiative is a joint program of the Mayor's Alliance for NYC's Animals and Neighborhood Cats, two private non-profit organizations committed to solving New York City's feral cat overpopulation crisis through Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR). Through our e-newsletter, we hope not only to keep you informed of our progress but also to inspire you to get involved in helping the feral and stray cats in your neighborhood. If you are already involved, then we hope our newsletter and our website will provide you with useful information that will help you work more effectively with the cats in your care. Thank you for being a part of our efforts to make New York City a safer place for the cats in your community! If you have comments or suggestions for this newsletter, we welcome them at eartips@NYCFeralCat.org. And if you haven't already, please visit our website at www.NYCFeralCat.org. Together, we can make a difference for feral and free-roaming cats in New York City.
Best wishes and happy reading,
