Out of the Cage!
Spring 2008 - Volume 5: Issue 1
We welcome you to our first issue of Out of the
Cage! for 2008. These past months have been busy ones for the
Mayor's Alliance and its 150-plus participating organizations (APOs)
— and many of them have the adoption numbers to prove it!
Now in the fourth year of our ten-year strategic
plan to transform our city into a no-kill community, our challenges
remain constant, and our adoption targets ever loom before us. For
this reason, it's important that we continue working in the collaborative
spirit in which the Mayor's Alliance was founded nearly six years
ago — working together, working harder, working smarter.
In this issue you'll read about how Mayor's Alliance
groups are working together to save lives. For example, you'll
read about how North Shore Animal League, which became an Alliance
member in 2007, generously has made its adoption
vans available many weekends this year to other Alliance member
groups, including Animal Care & Control, to give these groups
and their animals more face time with the public and create many
more adoptions. I particularly want to thank North Shore Animal
League America's Joanne Yohannan, Senior Vice President of Operations
and Emergency Rescue, for her part in making the vans available,
in the true spirit of collaboration.
You'll read about how Mayor's Alliance groups are
working harder — going that extra mile to save a few,
or many, more lives. Look at KittyKind, for example, with its Extra
Special Cats program — going to great lengths to match
adopters with seniors and other special cats and kittens. Or consider
Fifth Avenue Veterinary Specialists,
one of our partners in the care of our Picasso
Veterinary Fund animals — that made the extra effort to
collect donations of food to distribute to Mayor's Alliance member
shelters and rescue groups.
And working smarter? Yes, you'll read about
the specialized information sessions being offered to APOs through
our 2008 Strength Training series. By the
robust response we've received from our members to these training
opportunities, it's clear that we're focused on working smarter
— to get the job done.
Lastly, I want to thank author Karen Delise for
graciously agreeing to pen an article for this issue of Out of
the Cage! Karen's enlightening article
can help dispel some of the negative myths about Pit Bulls and cast
a positive light on this much-maligned breed.
I hope you enjoy this issue of Out of the Cage!
