Students at two different schools have put their time and energies to work to improve the plight of homeless animals in NYC.

Some fifth grade students at The School at Columbia University on Manhattan's Upper West Side selected the Mayor's Alliance as one of their beneficiaries of funds raised in the fall during the school's Penny Harvest. "Project E.A.R.T.H." along with faculty members Deanna Belcher and Carrie Rosenthal researched many community issues and debated which organizations should receive grants. The effort is part of the school's service-learning program, led by Ms. Belcher, which promotes philanthropy and community involvement among students in kindergarten through eighth grade. In a "Celebration of Giving" check presentation ceremony at the school on May 19, Mayor's Alliance President Jane Hoffman, accompanied by Maddie's Fund mascot Maddie, accepted a check from the students.

Several weeks later, Ms. Dolan, a special education teacher in Orange County, NY, saw the news story about gas prices affecting the Mayor's Alliance transport program and told her second grade class about it. The young students became so motivated to help that they undertook an extremely challenging task — they wrote a short book and held a book signing to raise money for the Mayor's Alliance transport program. To show its appreciation to the students, the Mayor's Alliance provided the class with Maddie's Coloring Books, Maddie's embroidered patches, and other literature for the event.

We are deeply touched and grateful to all of these wonderful students and their teachers for letting the Mayor's Alliance be a part of their important accomplishments on behalf of NYC's homeless animals.
