Low-Cost Spay/Neuter Resources in NYC
|
Making spay/neuter more affordable
is helping to increase the number of surgeries performed
in New York City — and reducing the chance of
unwanted pet pregnancies.
|
|
More and more pet owners today recognize the importance
of spaying and neutering their pets — both for the animal's
health and also to help curb pet overpopulation. And we also recognize
that we can't adopt our way out of pet overpopulation — spay/neuter
is a necessary component of any strategy to achieve a no-kill community.
But for many New Yorkers, the cost of the surgery is daunting —
especially those pet owners who are on fixed incomes or receive
public assistance.
While it's true that New York needs to increase
its capacity to facilitate more spay and neuter surgeries, particularly
for low-income New Yorkers, today there are more low-cost spay/neuter
resources for New Yorkers than ever before.
If you or someone you know wants to have a dog or
cat spayed or neutered, but cannot afford it, you might be eligible
for one of several programs available to New York City residents
with pets. (If you've been thinking about donating to a worthy cause,
you might well consider donating to the organizations that provide
these low-cost services – and be sure to ask that your donation
be applied to the spay/neuter program.)

Maddie's
Spay/Neuter Project NYC – If you
are a NYC resident and have a valid Medicaid card, you can
have your cat or dog (or a combination of cats and dogs totaling
up to six animals) spayed or neutered for $10 for each cat
and $20 for each dog at participating veterinary practices.

details and a list of participating veterinarians (representing
all five boroughs of NYC). |

ASPCA Cares Spay/Neuter Mobile Clinic –
The ASPCA Cares Spay/Neuter Mobile Clinic offers free spay/neuters
and rabies vaccinations to pets of New York City residents
who receive public assistance, such as Welfare, Medicaid,
Medicare, SSI, Disability, Food Stamps, or Public Housing.
(If you do not have proof of public assistance, a $25 donation
per animal is requested.) The mobile clinic travels to locations
throughout NYC's five boroughs. Because animals are taken
on a first-come, first-served basis, they need to arrive early
in the morning (before 7:00 a.m.) to wait in line with their
handlers for an intake. For detailed information about the
program and a calendar of clinic locations, call (212) 876-7700
x4303, or visit the ASPCA
web site.
The ASPCA Cares program also provides spay/neuters
for rescue groups and shelters registered with the ASPCA.
A registered rescuer with 10–25 animals may reserve
the mobile clinic to come directly to his or her location
for spay/neuter. For more information about this program,
visit the ASPCA
web site. |
