Alliance Members Examine Adoption Policies at Mayor's
Alliance Training Session
More than 30 representatives from Alliance
Participating Organizations (APOs) attended a special training
session — "Adoption Policies in a Gentler, Kinder Era
of Animal Sheltering" — provided exclusively for APOs
by the Mayor's Alliance at its offices on Thursday, December 1.
The session, led by Bert Troughton, Senior Director
of Imagine Humane, ASPCA, explored some of the shortcomings of traditional
animal adoption policies which, although developed to prevent "bad"
adoptions, sometimes discourage good adopters. By examining the
latest thinking in adoption policies and processes and how it's
working in some of the country's more progressive adption agencies,
participants explored ways in which they can apply this thinking
in their own organizations.
The December 1st training session is one of an ongoing
program of special training and skills development activities presented
by the Mayor's Alliance for member shelters and rescue groups, as
part of its strategic plan. "We place great value on our ability
to provide the Alliance membership with tools to increase their
capacity and effectiveness toward the mission of saving more lives,"
says Alliance President Jane Hoffman. "Trainings such as these
go right to the heart of that mission."
APOs can expect additional training and informational
events in 2006. Dates and topics will be announced.
