The Mayor's Alliance — It's Working!

Summer might be winding down, but the Mayor's Alliance and its 85-plus participating organizations are still in full swing when it comes to adoption events, transports, and other efforts to find great new homes for the animals.

Despite the heat and thunderstorms that accompanied some of the summer events, event adoptions were strong, as New Yorkers turned out in impressive numbers to meet their newest family members at Mayor's Alliance/Maddie's Pet Adoption Festivals. And with three major adoption events still to come this year, we expect even larger attendance — and more adoptions — through October.

Our transport van has been on the move as well, transporting animals from AC&C shelters to other member shelters and rescue groups (APOs) in record numbers. Transfers from AC&C to other APOs were up over 2003 numbers by 137 percent in the first half of 2005 (2003: 1,167; 2005: 2,767), resulting in more than 1,500 more animals saved.

And thanks to the Picasso Veterinary Fund (which is made possible through private donations from people like you), the lives of many AC&C animals requiring extraordinary medical attention before being adopted into loving homes by our APOs have been saved.

Although we look at the animals as precious lives, not numbers, we are heartened by the numbers of animals whose lives are being saved as a result of the collaborative efforts of so many dedicated Alliance organizations, including Animal Care & Control. And we are deeply grateful to Maddie's Fund for its financial commitment that is helping to move NYC toward its goal of becoming a no-kill community.

To be successful, however, will require the involvement and financial support of the people of NYC. We invite you to donate to the Mayor's Alliance (click here to make a convenient on-line contribution) or to an Alliance Participating Organization of your choice.

As you read about the efforts and accomplishments of Alliance groups and individuals featured in this month's newsletter, we hope you'll gain a better understanding of the tremendous collaborative efforts underway in NYC to save lives. And we want you to know — it's working!

– Jane

About Maddie's Fund

Maddie's Fund, The Pet Rescue Foundation (www.maddiesfund.org), is a family foundation funded by PeopleSoft Founder Dave Duffield, and his wife, Cheryl, to help create a no-kill nation. The first step is to help develop programs that guarantee loving homes for all healthy shelter dogs and cats throughout the country. The next step will be to save the sick and injured pets in animal shelters nationwide. Maddie's Fund is named after the family's beloved Miniature Schnauzer who passed away in 1997.
