Summer Adoption Events Keep the Heat on Pet Adoptions
Around NYC
|
Adoption events are a big deal
— especially to the animals awaiting their new
homes! |
|
New Yorkers love their weekends, and plenty of them
took to the parks and other venues in August to meet their newest
family members at adoption events around the city.
On a sunny July 30, Shubert Alley was the setting
for BROADWAY BARKS 7!, the annual star-studded pet adoption and fundraising
celebration hosted by Bernadette Peters and Mary Tyler Moore. More
than 20 shelters and rescue groups, many of them Alliance
Participating Organizations, introduced their Little New Yorkers
to an adoring public, resulting in plenty of adoptions. The event
also raised money for its participating groups, and for the Picasso
Veterinary Fund of the Mayor's Alliance.
As August rolled in, two Mayor's Alliance/Maddie's
Pet Adoption Festivals drew hundreds of attendees, many looking
to adopt a Little New Yorker. Animal
Haven hosted the festivities in Cunningham Park in Queens on
August 14, and BARC
Shelter hosted the heavily attended festival in Brooklyn's Prospect
Park the following Sunday. Adoptions were brisk, and the Mayor's
Alliance microchipping clinics drew new adopters as well as pets
and their people from the community to have their companion animals
"chipped." Despite the heat, animals and people alike
appeared to enjoy their afternoons in the park, relaxing to the
rhythms of a Dixieland band.

Maddie, the lovable Schnauzer mascot from Maddie's
Fund, greeted and delighted New Yorkers at the Natural Pet Fair/BARC
Cat Awareness Day event at BARC Shelter on Sunday, August 14. At
the event, Maddie accepted, on behalf of Maddie's Fund, a Companion
Animal Guardian Award presented by the Natural Pet Fair and In Defense
of Animals. Among the other honorees were BARC Shelter and Elinor
Molbegott of the Humane
Society of New York (both Alliance Participating Organizations),
and Janell Granier of the Mayor's Alliance. Cats from the ASPCA
and BARC found new homes, and event-goers enjoyed a variety of fun
and games and information tables.
As we move into the autumn season, more adoption
events are coming up — including Mayor's Alliance/Maddie's
Pet Adoption Festivals in Central Park and Staten Island's Clove
Lakes Park in October. Click

adoption events.
| About Maddie's Fund
Maddie's Fund, The
Pet Rescue Foundation (www.maddiesfund.org),
is a family foundation funded by PeopleSoft Founder Dave Duffield,
and his wife, Cheryl, to help create a no-kill nation. The
first step is to help develop programs that guarantee loving
homes for all healthy shelter dogs and cats throughout the
country. The next step will be to save the sick and injured
pets in animal shelters nationwide. Maddie's Fund is named
after the family's beloved Miniature Schnauzer who passed
away in 1997.
