Despite lingering wintry weather, pet adoptions
heated up in April at two Mayor's Alliance Pet Adoption Festivals in NYC.
The first event, at St. Paul the Apostle Church
on Manhattan's Upper West Side on April 9, drew pet-seekers and
interested passersby who couldn't resist stopping to get a warm
nose-rub from the many wonderful dogs greeting them on the sidewalk
outside the church. Inside, cat-lovers discovered paradise, surrounded
by cats and kittens of all shapes and sizes. And NYC Rabbit Rescue
and Rehab warmly greeted visitors hoping to adopt a house rabbit.

Maddie, the six-foot Schnauzer mascot for Maddie's
Fund, made her NYC debut at the event, greeting New Yorkers on the
street and posing for photos with children of all ages. (Maddie's
Fund, the Pet Rescue Foundation, recently awarded a $15.5 million
grant to the Mayor's Alliance to transform NYC into a no-kill
community.)
Three weeks later, on April 30, seven dogged Alliance
Participating Organizations joined Maddie in Astoria Park, Queens,
for a soggy but warm-spirited adoption fair. Despite the weather,
adopters showed up in the park and quite a few cats and dogs (and
a rabbit) met their new families there.

a home at the Mayor's Alliance Pet Adoption Festival
at Astoria Park on April 30, but Husky mix, Crystal

(bottom), are still looking for adoptive families. Click

Sophia, an eight-year-old black Lab mix who was
found on a Bronx street and ended up at NYC AC&C, was one of
the first dogs to leave Astoria Park with her new family.
Crystal,
one of Bobbi and the Strays' adoptable dogs at Astoria Park, whose
beautiful blue eyes were on the lookout for her new forever home,
sadly didn't find one at the event. So this beautiful, stoic Husky
mix, who recently lost a leg to cancer, will remain in foster care
with Ted and Grace, her loving foster family, until a caring adopter
comes along. (Click
here or e-mail Bobbi and the Strays at Bobbicares1@aol.com
for more information about adopting Crystal.)
Sweet, affectionate Noah,
a white German Shepherd mix, was found tied to a dry cleaning machine
and rescued by Bobbi and the Strays. Although Noah came to Astoria
Park seeking his new family, he's still looking. (Click

In addition to staging adoption events in April,
the Mayor's Alliance maintained a two-day presence at EarthFair
outside Grand Central Station. Volunteers distributed literature
and talked with hundreds of people about shelter adoptions, spaying
and neutering, and other animal topics. Pace University students
Corie Beniasians and Eva Leung were among the volunteers who helped
make the event a huge success.

Plenty more adoption events around the city are
scheduled throughout the coming months. We hope you'll join us —
to adopt, to volunteer, or just to show your support. Click

| About Maddie's Fund
Maddie's Fund, The
Pet Rescue Foundation (www.maddiesfund.org),
is a family foundation funded by PeopleSoft Founder Dave Duffield,
and his wife, Cheryl, to help create a no-kill nation. The
first step is to help develop programs that guarantee loving
homes for all healthy shelter dogs and cats throughout the
country. The next step will be to save the sick and injured
pets in animal shelters nationwide. Maddie's Fund is named
after the family's beloved Miniature Schnauzer who passed
away in 1997.
