The season of 2005 Mayor's Alliance Pet Adoption Festivals begins on Saturday, April 9, and continues through the fall. Please join us for the fun and adopt a little New Yorker today!

New York will be a pet adopter's paradise beginning this month when the Mayor's Alliance launches a series of pet adoption events throughout the city.

The lineup begins on Saturday, April 9, when St. Paul the Apostle Church on Manhattan's Upper West Side hosts an adoption festival that will feature dogs, cats, and rabbits. Among the Alliance Participating Organizations showing adoptable animals at the event are A Cause for Paws, American Foundation for Animal Rescue, Animal Haven, Animal Care & Control, Brooklyn Animal Resource Coalition (BARC), Bobbi and the Strays, KittyKaretakers of Queens, Linda's Feral Cat Assistance (despite the name, she only brings friendly cats), Little Shelter, Miss Rumples' Orphanage, New York City Siamese Rescue, and Rabbit Rescue & Rehab.

Potential adopters and other event goers will have the opportunity to discuss their pet-related questions with a veterinarian, a trainer, and a groomer. The five-hour event (from noon to 5:00 p.m.) promises to be a fun-filled afternoon — and the perfect occasion to adopt a little New Yorker.

On Saturday, April 30, the Mayor's Alliance will stage a Pet Adoption Festival in Astoria Park, Queens — the first of seven NYC park adoption events around the city this season. Subsequent events will be held in Brooklyn's Prospect Park, Staten Island's Clove Lakes Park, Queens' Cunningham Park, and Manhattan's Central Park. For details about each of these events, please visit the Events section of the Alliance web site.

Cat-lovers have a weekend of bliss to look forward to in October, when the Cat Fanciers' Association and the Mayor's Alliance co-host the Adopt-A-Cat Festival October 8 and 9 at Madison Square Garden. Details are available on the Alliance web site.

Additional dates you'll want to mark on your calendar are:

Friday, April 22, and Saturday, April 23, when the Mayor's Alliance will participate in the EarthFair outside Grand Central Station. Stop by our table and say hello, and show your support for NYC's animals.

Of special interest to staff members and volunteers of Alliance Participating Organizations is the "Meet Your Match" Adoption Program training on Wednesday, May 11. This day-long training seminar, co-hosted by the Mayor's Alliance and the ASPCA and sponsored by the Iam's Company, will show you how to create positive customer relations, bridge the information gap between animal handling staff and adoption staff, and match the right dog with the right guardian. To find out more about the "Meet Your Match" Canine-ality Adoption Program seminar, visit Meet Your Match on the ASPCA web site, or contact Kelly Cunningham at kellyc@aspca.org or call (212) 876-7700 x4405.
