High-profile Events Spark Robust Media Coverage

More and more, the Mayor's Alliance and its participating organizations are receiving positive and valuable media coverage. Following are some of the recent Alliance-related happenings that New Yorkers (and more!) are hearing about in the media.

Support Team ASPCA!Team ASPCA's NYC Marathon Run

The ASPCA Marathon Team's participation in the 2004 ING New York City Marathon — to raise money for the ASPCA's support of the Mayor's Alliance — on Sunday, November 7, received coverage by WABC. Both the ASPCA and the Mayor's Alliance are mentioned in the story, which was covered by Eyewitness News reporter Lisa Colagrossi. Click here to view the story.

Iams Have a Heart: Home 4 the Holidays Pet Adoption DriveHome 4 the Holidays

On Friday, November 19, Animal Haven launched its participation in a New York City holiday pet adoption campaign with a kick-off event at Fetch Bar & Grill on Manhattan's Upper East Side. The campaign, Iams Have a Heart: Home 4 the Holidays, is a worldwide pet adoption drive involving more than 1,300 animal shelters, with the goal of encouraging prospective pet adopters who are thinking about getting a pet during the holiday season to adopt from a local shelter. The campaign will run until December 19.

Mike Arms, founder of Home 4 the Holidays, was on hand for the launch event, joined by Jennifer Bristol, Associate Director at Animal Haven, Jane Hoffman, Mayor's Alliance President, and Janell Granier, Director of Programs for the Alliance. The Alliance also provided a Pet-Ark Kiosk, similar to an ATM machine, that helps potential adopters easily locate their ideal companion animals from among the many dogs and cats listed on the BigApplePets.com web site.

The Home 4 the Holidays event was featured on WABC-TV Channel 7's Friday night Newsreel and also on the Fox News cable station.

Gingerbread Homes for AnimalsGingerbread Homes for Animals

December got off to a bang with the opening of Rational Animal's humane education event and fundraiser, Gingerbread Homes for Animals. The high-profile event, which ran from December 1–5, featured participation by NYC Parks Commissioner Adrian Benepe and Central Park Conservancy President Doug Blonsky, who welcomed guests on opening day. Even the Park's Clydesdale horses were on hand to greet attendees at the front door of the Dana Discovery Center in Central Park, where the event was held!

The event received great media attention!

The five-day education and fundraising event drew animal-lovers of all ages. Master pastry chefs donated their gingerbread creations — one-of-a-kind edible gingerbread sculptures with animal themes — for viewing (which later were given away in a raffle drawing that raised money for New York's at-risk animals). Free animal care workshops on topics ranging from "Foster Parenting Kittens" and "The Well Mannered Dog" to "Pet Care for Kids" drew animal enthusiasts of all ages, as did the sale of gingerbread cookies and Gingerbread Homes Kits that let people create their own gingerbread houses for the holidays. All money raised from the event will go to help at-risk animals through the Mayor's Alliance for NYC's Animals and Rational Animal.
