BARKS 11

Shubert Alley, West of Broadway, between 44th and
45th Streets, between Broadway and 8th Avenue, Manhattan
Mary Tyler Moore and Bernadette Peters will host
the eleventh annual BROADWAY BARKS, a star-studded dog and cat adopt-a-thon
benefiting New York City animal shelters and adoption agencies.
Moore and Peters will be joined by many favorite Broadway stars,
who will present the animals for adoption. BROADWAY BARKS 11 will
feature a sampling of potential pets from several New York City
animal shelters and adoption agencies, including A Cause for Paws,
Adopt A Boxer Rescue, Animal Haven, Anjellicle Cats Rescue, ASPCA,
AC&C, BARC, Bide-A-Wee, Bobbi & the Strays, City Critters,
Humane Society of New York, Husky House, KittyKind, Long Island
Greyhound Rescue, Loving Touch, Metropolitan Maltese Rescue, Mid-Atlantic
Great Dane Rescue, NYC Siamese Rescue, Pet-I-Care, P.L.U.T.O., Russell
Refuge, Staten Island Council for Animal Welfare, Stray from the
Heart, Tigger Foundation, ARF, and SaveKitty Foundation. Representatives
from these organizations will be on hand to offer educational information
on spaying and neutering. Peters will be signing her New York
Times Bestseller, Broadway Barks, at the event. BROADWAY
BARKS 11 will also feature an auction of celebrity-autographed memorabilia.
Proceeds from the auction and other donations received during the
day will benefit the attending shelters and adoption organizations.

Broadway Barks 11, Shubert Alley, West of Broadway,
between 44th and 45th Streets, between Broadway and 8th Avenue,

Each year at Broadway Barks, one-of-a-kind stuffed
dogs that are signed by the casts (and in some cases, decorated
by the wardrobe departments) of some of Broadway's hottest shows
are auctioned to raise money for the Picasso Veterinary Fund of
the Mayor's Alliance for NYC's Animals. Some of the 20 shows represented
are All My Sons, Billy Elliott, Blithe Spirit,
Equus, Hair, Hairspray, 9 to 5, South
Pacific, West Side Story, and more. There is also a special
hound honoring Broadway Barks, signed by founders Bernadette Peters
and Mary Tyler Moore. The Autographed Hounds of Broadway will go
on display beginning Friday, June 26, at the Christofle boutique.
Pre-bids will be accepted at the store until July 10. (Later in
the month, Christofle will host two special shopping days, when
it will donate 15% of the store's sales to the Picasso Veterinary
Fund.) Bidding will continue at Broadway Barks on July 11 beginning
at 3:30 p.m., where final bids will be accepted in the silent auction.
Bids will start at $150.00. Payment may be made by check, cash,
or credit card.

How to Manage a Feral Cat Colony" Workshop

Come learn how to care for the feral and stray cats
in your community and make use of the many resources now available
to assist you. All steps in setting up a managed colony will be
covered, including establishing good community relations, feeding,
building and placing shelters, arranging vet care, finding recovery
space, safely handling feral cats, and trapping (with an emphasis
on conducting a mass-trapping of an entire feral colony at once).
All workshop attendees will become TNR certified, and NYC residents
will gain access to free spay/neuter and trap rental. Join the 2,000+
caretakers trained to date! A non-refundable $15 course fee and
advance registration are required.

Do you love animals and want to volunteer? To become
an adult volunteer (18 years and older), simply fill out our adult
volunteer form and send it to the shelter. You will then need
to attend a volunteer orientation. The orientation is about one-and-a-half
hours long and will provide you with an introduction to our volunteer
program. A Green Dot training class follows the orientation for
dog walking volunteers.

You are invited to what promises to be a doggone
great time for dogs and their humans. In an effort to help our furry
friends we are partnering with the Mayors Alliance for NYC Animals,
Rescue Ink, AC&C, North Shore Animal League, Sean Casey Animal
Rescue, Animal Center of Queens, Zani's Furry Friends, Babette Haggerty,
Wellness, Two Way Pet, My Two Dogs, and more to make this celebration
an adoption drive. If you know anyone who has been thinking about
adopting a dog, or if you want to make an addition to your own family,
come and check out some of our furry friends in our Adoption Alley.
All are welcome, so bring your friends and neighbors and lots of
pups (friendly and up-to-date on vaccinations, please)! In addition
to fun play for the doggies there will be food, games, and many
wonderful items for raffle. All of the money raised will go to the
participating rescue groups. Low-cost microchipping ($25, includes
insertion and registration) for dogs and cats by the Mayor's Alliance
for NYC's Animals.

County Fair: Canine Tent

The Dutchess County Fair features a canine tent
with daily shows in the performance area, including agility, frisbee
competition, doggie, dancing, etc. Outside of the tent we feature
Sheepdog herding and dock dogs. The remainder of the tent features
rescue groups representing various breeds, as well as the local
kennel club (which is strong in education) and a therapy dog group.
It is a great fair — only 2 hours north of NYC!

Animal Day

World Animal Day is widely celebrated in countries
throughout the world on October 4, the Feast Day of St. Francis
of Assisi, the patron saint of animals. It is intended as a day
of celebration for anyone in the world who cares about animals.
It is not restricted to any one nationality, creed, religion, political
belief, or ideology. To participate, organizations, groups, animal
shelters, places of worship, schools, clubs, and individuals schedule
events to honor the day. Since the official World Animal Day website
was launched in 2003, the number of World Animal Day events taking
place throughout the world has increased year upon year and with
your help we can ensure the trend continues.

trappers about the tips and tricks to successfully using a drop-trap,

on the Water), and Mike Phillips (Urban Cat League).

Neighbor Relations is a crucial part of good colony
management. Through role-play and going over the steps involved,
learn how to establish a good relationship with your colony's neighbors,
handle problems and complaints that arise, and how to avoid potential
