Mayor's Alliance/Maddie's Pet Adoption Festivals and Other Special NYC Adoption Days

Following is a listing of adoption events in and around NYC where you can go to adopt your next companion animal — that is, your new best friend! Listed below (highlighted in boxes) are Mayor's Alliance/Maddie's Pet Adoption Festivals where multiple shelters and rescue groups show animals for adoption. Also listed below are special one-time adoption days held by Alliance Participating Organizations (APOs) at locations in or near New York City. Call for adoption hours

ASPCA, 424 East 92nd Street, Manhattan

Adopt a shelter dog and receive a free adoption gift bag (while supplies last) with useful and fun items to help make the transition from shelter life to loving home. Pet-Valu stores have provided goodies ranging from Homeopath Hemp and Tree Tea Oil shampoo (for dogs) to Bags-on-Board biodegradable carry-along poop bags (for responsible owners). Also included are holistic natural food samples from Wellness and human-grade biscuits and treats from Old Mother Hubbard. Adopters also get to know the dog who inspired this event — Wally, a Bull Terrier who looks like a bicycle seat. St. Martin's Press is providing free copies of author Marsha Boulton's latest book, Wally's World: Life with Wally the Wonder Dog.

General Theological Seminary: Blessing of the Animals and Microchipping Clinic

General Theological Seminary, 21st Street (midblock, between 9th and 10th Avenues), Manhattan

General Theological Seminary celebrates the life of St. Francis of Assisi, renowned for his love of animals, by offering a "Blessing of the Animals." The event also commemorates World Animal Day. All are welcome at our service — every animal, every human! The service will take place outdoors on the steps of our Chapel, weather permitting; in case of rain, the service will be moved indoors. Please remember to leash your dogs. Small animals, including fish, reptiles, and pets in travel cases are all welcome. The service will last about 20 minutes. City Critters will be present to provide pets for adoption, and the Mayor's Alliance for NYC's Animals will be providing low-cost ($25, includes registration) microchipping services.

Church of the Resurrection: Blessing of Pets

Bobbi and the Strays will be attending the mass with a few of their senior and sick dogs. The church has also decided for a second year in row to donate money collected at this mass to Bobbi and the Strays. Following this event, Senator Serf Maltese will host a pet adoption day at Bobbi and the Strays at Atlas Park. Refreshments will be provided.

KittyKind: "Seniors for Seniors" Adoption Event at PETCO

KittyKind is proud to announce its second Seniors for Seniors adoption event of the year. The first event held in April was a success and resulted in the adoption of six cats. Seniors for Seniors offers a unique opportunity for seniors (or anyone interested in a calm loving cat!) to meet some of KittyKind's senior cats, all of whom are looking to find their "forever" home, and will provide infinite amounts of love, affection, and joy in return. Knowledgeable adoption representatives will be available to make the perfect match with a new feline friend.

Bideawee: Adopt a Shelter Dog Weekend

October is Adopt a Shelter Dog Month and Bideawee encourages you to contribute to the homeless dog solution by adopting a shelter dog! When you adopt a dog, you don't only save that dog; you also make room for Bideawee to be able to save more dogs in his/her place. Bideawee dog trainers and matchmakers will be available for consultation at all locations. All dog adoptions include spay/neuter, age-appropriate vaccinations, microchip, heartworm test, and one free dog training consultation. Adoption event guests will have a chance to win gift certificates to Bideawee Veterinary Practices, a dog training series in Wantagh, and other prizes. Also enjoy agility demonstrations in Wantagh and Westhampton and a search and rescue exhibition in Westhampton.

Join Animal Care & Control, Bideawee, and other shelters and rescue groups at the annual St. Francis Day Fair Blessing of the Animals, where thousands of New Yorkers, their animal companions, and many international guests gather to honor St. Francis' message of compassion for all of creation. The event also commemorates World Animal Day. In addition to a blessing of the animals on the Cathedral green, enjoy artists and performers, as well as exhibitors including animal advocacy groups, pet adoption agencies, environmental lobbyists, peace and social justice advocates, and social service organizations. Event is free and open to the public.

Dogs, cats, puppies, and kittens will be available for adoption in the North Shore Animal League America adoption van. Low-cost microchipping will be offered to neighborhood cats and dogs for $25 (cash or check). If you'd like to have your cat or dog microchipped, please bring him/her to the event in a carrier or on a leash. We'll ask for your contact information and the name and phone number of someone you trust in case you can't be reached and your dog or cat is found. Ready New York will be on hand to answer questions about disaster preparedness and your animals.

Costumed canines will compete in a contest to raise awareness for Animal Haven's Adopt-A-Pet program. Dogs of all breeds and sizes are invited to dress up and enter. Top prizes will be awarded to the dogs whose costume best evokes "Times Square," "Broadway," or the "2008 Election." Dogs will be available for adoption. The event is free and open to the public.
